7th October - Evretou open match - total fished 14 : total weight caught : 13lbs 13ozs. A difficult dam to fish as the fish do not appear to like the vibration of so meny vehicles. It always fishes better when there are not so many anglers. A big welcome to Dave who is in Cyprus for 2 weeks holiday and had a lovely roach or two in his catch. The majority of the weights comprised of 10-12oz roach. In first place was Vic Chambers with 3lb 2ozs ( a great victory for vic who was using red maggots ) In joint second place was Jackie and Colin with 2lb 2ozs each and the pairs were won by Colin and Ellen with 3lb 8ozs.
14th October -Evretou summer league match - total fished 18 : total weight caught 24lbs 15ozs. Again the weights reflect the fact that the fish do not like to be disturbed! In first place was Steve James with 3lbs 12ozs. Second place went to Colin Farrer with 3lbs 6ozs and third place was won by Dave Wilkinson with 3lbs 2ozs. The pais this week were won by Steve and Jim with a total of 5lbs 12ozs.
21st October - Polemidhia open match - total fished 16 : total weight caught : 352lbs 9ozs. Some magnificent carp up to 7lb each were caught today. Some really nasty pegs here with the ‘green slush’ moving in all the time. A carp went off with Ellen’s pole to the middle of the island - this was retreived by Steve Duckworth who swam out (in all that slush!) and got it back for her. What a hero! Steve D also came first this week with 54lbs 6ozs, Steve J came second with 30lbs 2ozs and third place went to Colin with 29lbs 1oz. The pairs were won by Steve D and Derek with a total of 66lbs 6ozs. All had fantastic weights.
28th October - Polemidhia summer league match - total fished 20 : total weight caught : 133lbs. Sun cream is still very much needed as the weather is still very warm at 25 degrees. Lots of midges about now so insect repellent is advised. Today is a bank holiday in Cyprus so lots of families are out fishing along with their music blasting from their cars. We were treated to a disco dancing display on the banks of the dam. Jackie came first this week with a quite magnificent 17lbs 15ozs ( She is keeping her bait a secret!) Steve Duckworth came second with 16lbs 2ozs and in third place was Peter with 10lbs 7ozs. The pairs were won by Jackie and Athos with a t otal of 23lbs 1oz.
All the dams attract the most wonderful wild life including pelicans, geese, ducks, eagles and numerous other birds. I’m not sure of some of the types of birds so I will have to buy a ‘bird book’ to be able to let you know what they are!
Roach, Carp, Catfish,Bass and Zander appear to be the most popular species of fish in the dams and a wide variety of bait is used including bread punch, corn, pelletts, luncheon meat, cat food and maggots plus Jackie’s secret bait!
4th November open match was held at Kouris dam - we haven’t fished here for a long time and it was a very good day for most anglers depending on where you were pegged. There were a few very disappointed anglers as they didn’t have a bite due to either very shallow pegs or very deep ones. Derek managed to hook himself a wonderful carp weighing 5lbs - just before a gust of wind came along and broke his pole! Jackie also caught a very nice carp weighing 6lbs 2ozs. Peter lost his pole to a carp but Alan managed to lasso it and the carp (which was still on the end of his line) was then landed by Peter. During this fiasco, Peter had stripped off ready to retrieve his pole but decided the water was too cold to go in. Some of the pegs were very steep so Vic reversed his vehicle to the edge of the bank, tied a rope to the truck and abseiled down to his peg where he dug himself in! Ray Ayre came first this week and his bag included a beautiful carp weighing 8lbs 2ozs - his total catch was 14lbs 12ozs. In second place was Andy Howard with 14lbs 10ozs. Andy is just over in Cyprus for a few weeks and returns to England during December. Jim Schofield came in at third place with 11lbs 3ozs. The pairs were won by Ray and Derek with a total of 19lbs 12ozs. A total of 17 anglers fished this week in the first open match of the winter league. Total weight caught was 90lbs 3ozs.
11th November we returned to Kouris for the first winter league match. 16 fished this match and Vic drew the same peg as last week so again abseiled down to his position and, together with his pick axe, dug himself in. Again there were quite a few disappointed anglers that didn’t have a bite - some of the pegs are quite shallow and some quite deep waters.
