7th January Happy New Year - just a reminder that fishing licences at 34 euros are renewable from 1st January. This entitles you to fish at any of the dams on the list provided by the fisheries for the whole. Our first open match of the New Year was held at Asprokremnos dam - A total of 12 members fished. The dam had risen quite a bit with the water covering most of the islands so the approach was made the long way round via the Turkish village end. The torrential rain had made big ruts in the track by Tourist Alley thus making access difficult. The cormorants were in abundance which is normally a good sign and a baby deer was also spotted. We were very fortunate with the weather as the rain held off apart from the first five minutes when the umbrellas were quickly erected but then just as quickly retracted. The sun shone for most of the time but the wind off the dam was very cool. In first place this week was Chas Hunt with 7lbs 6ozs, second place went to Jim Schofield with 5lbs 6ozs and third place went to John Sutton with 3lbs 4ozs. The pairs were won by Chas and Ellen with a combined weight of 9lbs 1oz. Total weight caught was 28lbs.
13th January Back at Aspro for a league match. We saw an enormous pig at the side of the road (he had probably escaped from nearby) - last week a deer, this week a pig - whatever next! A total of 11 members fished. Our approach this week was from the Tourist Alley side (dam wall end). On our exit last week we had attempted to fill the holes with stones but it was still a bit precarious. It was minus 3 deg and a frost when we left home but it turned out to be a lovely day with temperatures quickly rising. Alan Blaine was the winner this week with 9lbs 7ozs ( a total of 339 small fish in his catch which averages at approx 68 fish per house) well done Alan. In second place was Ray Ayre with 6lbs 6ozs. Third place went to Chas Hunt with 6lbs. The pairs were won by Alan and Chas with a combined weight of 15lbs 7ozs. Total weight caught was 37lbs 10ozs.
20th January Again back at Aspro - this venue had been voted by our members as it was considered the only safe approachable dam at the moment. Woolly hats were the order of the day as it was very cold first thing. However, the sun broke through and most hats were discarded. In first place this week was Chas Hunt with 6lb (the same weight as last week), second place went to Alan Blaine with 5lbs 1oz (Alan had the same peg as last week but not quite so many fish) and third place went to Jim Schofield with 3lbs 12ozs. The pairs were won by Alan and Jim with 8lbs 13ozs. Total weight caught was 29lbs 60zs between 10 anglers.
27th January Aspro once again and we were delighted to find that that the ‘approach road’ had been levelled out by machine and all the holes had been filled in. Our thanks to the Water Authorities if they were involved. The dam had risen quite a lot due to the heavy rain that had fallen during the past week. We had to fish further along the bank as the pegs from last week were now under water and Jackie’s peg this week was surrounded by bark which was impossible to get through. Jim was next to her but not quite as badly affected. In joint first place was Chas and Lance with 3lbs 5ozs each and in third place was Ray Ayre with 3lbs 1ozs. 4th place was won by Pete Heritage with 2lbs 9ozs. Lance, Ray and Peter all had a decent carp in their catch. The pairs were won by Chas and Ellen with a combined weight of 5lbs 2ozs. Total weight caught was 21lbs 14ozs between 13 anglers.
5 members ‘pleasure fished’ at the new dam (Kannaviou) which is set in really lovely surroundings. Fishing is fairly difficult due to a lot of weed in the dam but I’m sure they will go back and try again. A few trout were caught which makes a nice change. Athos went the following week and caught two really superb trout.
Several dams are now closed for fishing - the two that affect us are Yermasoyia in Limmasol and Mavrokolymbos in Paphos.
