Tuesday 30th June
The match this week was held at Evretou Dam. This match is known as the 'Old Shack Classic' - a fun day organised annually by Athos when a trophy and various prizes will be awarded at a later date. In first place (appropriately) was Athos with 10 lbs 13ozs, - Athos will not be claiming the trophy so it will be awarded to Alan Jervis who was in second place with 10 lbs 12ozs, in third place was Jackie Blaine with 9 lbs 4ozs and in fourth place was Lance Chubb with 7 1bs 13ozs. The pairs were won by Athos and Colin with a combined weight of 16 1bs 15ozs. 13 members fished and the total weight caught was 63 1bs 05ozs. Two members had been down the previous day to 'peg out' and pegged 10 one side of the dam with the remaining pegs on the other side. They also cleared a lot of the weeds but there was still a lot of snagging on the day which meant a lot of hooks and floats were lost in the weeds.
What is very noticeable now is the appalling state of the banks caused by so much rubbish being left behind by the 'illegals' (who call themselves fishermen). Not only do they leave all their rubbish behind (encouraging rats etc.) but most of them do not have a licence to fish. They are also lighting fires and leaving all the charcoal and debris behind. It is about time the Fisheries Department did something about it. It needs policing by bailiffs and the offenders appropriately fined or banned from the dams. If Cyprus wants to encourage tourism then they should be making sure the dams are fit to visit (as they do in Ireland). The iIIegals have always left an appalling mess at Polemidhia but now they are doing the same at Evretou and Kannaviou. Even Arminou, which must be one of most beautiful dams, is being treated with disrespect by these illegal fishermen. It used to be a pleasure to go to the dams but not any longer!
